Today, some of the biggest global book publishers including HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, Houghton Mifflin, among others and major entertainment brands are collaborating with YouTube Kids on a huge, global initiative called #ReadAlong month. The month-long program which launched today aims to make a big impact on the next generation of little readers – by helping them hone their reading skills as well as encouraging a lifelong passion for reading.
The #ReadAlong campaign on YouTube Kids has inspired major publishers to create digital content that not only helps kids learn to read, but also shows them why it’s fun. For example, Houghton Mifflin has published a playlist of fairytale videos that features screen text and voiceover so that kids can listen to a narrator while reading along themselves. Meanwhile, HarperCollins has created a new Kid Critic series, which features book reviews for kids, by kids. Beyond book publishers, this huge initiative also features other global entertainment brands who have created content aimed at encouraging kids to get reading including Universal’s Despicable Me Minions and NFL star, Martellus Bennett. The event spans multiple continents, reaching the U.S., Australia, Canada, Ghana, India, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, to name a few.
The YouTube Kids app is the first Google product built from the ground up with kids in mind. The app makes it easier for children to find videos on topics they want to explore and is available for free on Google Play and the App store. YouTube Kids continues to put parents in the driver’s seat with additional parental controls that allow parents to choose what is right for their family. In addition to #Readalong launching today, YouTube Kids also continues to promote STEM through their programming with the recent launch of scripted series Hyperlinked a new YouTube Red original for families. The show, which is available to YouTube Red subscribers on YouTube and YouTube kids, features young girls creating their own web site and having fun along the way.
